Is canyoning safe - guided canyoning in Nevidio Canyon, Montenegro

Is canyoning safe? It's the first question almost every guest asks us before booking a tour through Nevidio or Grabovica Canyon. The short answer: canyoning in Montenegro is safe when you do it with a licensed guide, proper equipment and respect for the weather. In this guide we explain how safety works on our tours, what the real risks are, and what you can do to make sure your adventure goes smoothly.

Canyoning in Montenegro - How Safe Is It?

Canyoning means walking, swimming, jumping and abseiling down narrow mountain river gorges. It sounds extreme, but most canyoning accidents happen for the same few reasons: inexperienced groups without a guide, poor equipment, entering a canyon after heavy rain, and jumping without checking the water depth. On our tours we reduce every one of those risks to a minimum.

Our team has been guiding tours through Nevidio for more than a decade and has completed over 400 tours in this canyon alone. Our founder and lead guide, Boris Kosić, is an IRF-licensed whitewater guide, an ILS lifeguard instructor, an alpinist and a ski instructor. We know every jump, every passage and every anchor in the canyon by heart.

How Safety Works on Our Canyoning Tours

1. Professional Equipment

Every participant gets full equipment, included in the price:

  • 5mm neoprene suit - protects from cold water and scrapes
  • La Sportiva canyoning shoes - grip on wet rock
  • 3mm neoprene socks
  • Helmet - worn for the entire tour
  • Harness and ropes - for safe descents down waterfalls

We check and replace gear regularly, and insurance and tourist tax are included in the price.

2. Safety Briefing Before Entering the Canyon

Before the start, your guide explains how to jump, how to slide down the natural water chutes, how to hold the rope and which signals we use in the canyon. Nobody jumps until the guide has checked the spot and shown the landing zone.

3. Every Jump Is Optional

Nevidio has jumps of up to 8 meters, but almost all of them can be bypassed by abseiling down a rope. We never push anyone to jump - the pace of the tour adapts to the group.

4. Weather and Water Levels

The biggest danger in any canyon is a sudden rise in water after heavy rain (flash floods). That's why we watch the forecast and water levels closely, and if conditions aren't safe, we cancel or reschedule the tour. Your safety always comes before the plan.

What You Can Do for Your Own Safety

  • Be honest about your health - tell your guide about injuries, heart conditions, asthma or fear of heights
  • Listen to your guide - only jump where your guide shows you
  • Sleep well and eat breakfast - a canyon burns more energy than you'd expect
  • Bring water and dry clothes - see our canyoning packing guide
  • Tell someone your plan - there's no phone signal in the canyon, so let family or your accommodation know where you're going
  • Bring cash - payment is cash only on site, as there's no signal for card transactions

Why You Shouldn't Go Into the Canyon Without a Guide

Nevidio and Grabovica lie in a wild part of Montenegro near Šavnik (Savnik), far from hospitals and without mobile signal. A local guide knows where the water is deep enough to jump, where the anchors are and how the canyon behaves after rain. Entering a canyon on your own without experience and equipment is genuinely dangerous - with a guide, it's an unforgettable and safe adventure.
